My First Job: Janet Montgomery

Bournemouth, the largest town in Dorset county, England, is known as a coastal resort destination within the United Kingdom.

It’s also the birthplace of 26-year-old Janet Montgomery, star of the new CBS show “Made in Jersey.”

Montgomery hailed from a working class family where”I didn’t get any pocket money,” said the actress. She wasn’t bitter about her lack of allowance, but rather, motivated to get a job.

At age 13, she took a position as a server at the Bournemouth town center cafe. Montgomery disregarded the fact that she was “working young than the law allows.” She earned 2.85 pounds an hour and adored her time at the cafe.

“I loved earning my own money,” said Montgomery. “I loved being treated as an adult around other people and having a life outside of school and being friends with people older than me.”

While Montgomery spent her money eating McDonalds food and buying “shitty clothes at cheap shops,” money allowed her the power to be a consumer while hanging out with her friends.

She worked at that job, spending afternoons away from her family, until she was 15. “My family was relaxed during the day. I could disappear as long as I was home at night. I could get on the bus on weekends and just go anywhere. It was marvelous.”
